Mathematic, winner of the "La Grande Fabrique de l'image" call for projects as part of the France 2030 plan
Paris, May 26, 2023 – The “Mathematic 2030” project, led by the French special effects (VFX) and 3D animation studio Mathematic, has been named winner of the call for projects "The Great Image Factory" by the Minister of Culture. This project, built around 3 major axes, aims to accelerate the development of the studio in the regions (especially in Montpellier) by strengthening its partnerships with higher education establishments, and by integrating an ambitious strategy of decarbonization of its activity.
On the occasion of the Cannes Film Festival, Rima Abdul Malak – Minister of Culture -, Bruno Bonnell – Secretary General for Investment – in charge of France 2030, and Eric Lombard – Managing Director of Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations – have presented the winners of the France 2030 “La Grande Fabrique de l'image” call for projects; a program endowed with 350 million euros which will enable France to become a leader filming, production of films, series and video games, post production (including VFX), as well as training in cinema and audiovisual professions.
The first axis of the "Mathematic 2030" project concerns the acceleration of the development of society in the territories. In September 2022, accompanied by Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, Mathematic opened its first regional office in Occitanie – in Montpellier –; marking on this occasion its commitment to local actors in the Cultural and Creative Industries sector. The studio aims to grow its workforce in Montpellier to reach 150 employees in 3 years. This presence in this dynamic environment will also allow Mathematic to benefit from many synergies in a rapidly evolving territory in which several specialized schools have notably established themselves.
In this context, the second objective of "Mathematic 2030" will also make it possible to position the company as a key partner in the training provided by four French schools of excellence in its field of activity, ESMA, the ESRA Group, ARTFX and Kourtrajmé. . This commitment aims to retain students and secure their careers by encouraging their immersion within the group, in particular by promoting innovative contracting models such as the “international mobility” contract within its studios in France, Montreal and Los Angeles. Angeles.
In a collegial approach, the company also promotes an inclusive and socially responsible ecosystem by financially supporting projects aimed at opening up the digital creation professions to a wider audience. The studio will also actively participate in the emergence of innovations in the field of education, in particular through the development of online learning solutions (e-learning).
Finally, the "Mathematic 2030" project is structured around an ambitious third major axis of decarbonization, which proposes to rethink the use of visual effects (VFX) and their use in a sustainable way.. Indeed, if VFX already make it possible to reduce the carbon footprint of audiovisual projects by limiting the shooting of certain real scenes that consume a lot of CO2, Mathematic wishes to go further in its decarbonization approach.
The group is thus working on the design of solutions that will allow it to be able to significantly reduce the carbon cost of VFX rendering calculations and to precisely quantify the consumption for each work. This is mainly based on a global virtualization project for the group's computing capacities; around an advanced partnership with the company Qarnot which will make it possible to recover waste heat from servers to set up a digital circular economy solution capable of meeting the heat needs of private and/or public infrastructures (public swimming pools , social housing and/or district heating networks).
